SOLAR CARVE

LOBBY PIAZZA

NEW YORK, NEW YORK

Truly unique urban landscape working environments have been realized in Studio Gang Architect’s office building design with its combination of Hudson River and Highline frontages. The 2nd floor office amenity terrace has both uninterrupted waterfront views and immediate visual connection with the Highline’s landscape. Serving primarily the building’s tenant population, HMWhite tested several designs options that explored a variety of exterior uses. Each design iteration was guided by shared common environmental design, human comfort enhancement strategies and spatial experience design principles. An open piazza emerged within a rigorous consensus building process that reconciled building marketing, address-defining place-making criteria. Embracing the shared landscape of both the River and the Highline, the landscape design builds upon both the man-made construct and the natural. A vivid material vocabulary references familiar neighborhood characters while establishing a distinct visual personality. The piazza’s robust landscape framework establishes a strong sense of place while still providing mystery of the unexpected.
