Seven Pines Estate

Location: Scarsdale, New York

Known for its pedigree garden history as Seven Pines, this 3-acre property required a comprehensive transformation due to years of neglect, disturbance from expanding house construction, and the owner’s exterior program wishes to accommodate a growing young family. Highlighting the property’s mature landscape assets and diminishing its liabilities, a new vision was crafted to restore this estate’s former garden glory. Recognizing the significance of the landmark specimen trees, seasonal tree preservation techniques were employed well in advance of a final landscape design. The majesty of property’s named signature Pines, Oaks and Honey Locust trees informed each landscape design intervention. Respectful of the property’s historical landscape design significance, planting matrixes of indigenous plant communities were developed and woven into the remaining valuable plantings. A new landscape framework emerged building upon the existing fabric - instilling enhanced privacy throughout.

Complimentary garden rooms were designed as interior use extensions to blend seamlessly and transition to the property’s landscape context. Spatial quality, light levels, scale, colors, textures and aromas were composed with garden architectural materials to establish a common landscape language. Where necessary, new landscape frameworks were introduced to blur the junction of where “new” meets “old.” The landscape design’s spatial manipulations using topography and layered planting matrixes give the illusion of a grander expanse.
