Garden Court & Rooftop Garden Terrace
New York, New York
Upon entering this "BoHo-Chic" 150 residential unit building, the unexpected presence of the garden draws one deeper into the lobby to better understand the source of its lush and mysterious wonder in New York's Hudson Square. This courtyard stretches across the width of the building and fully occupies the depth of its rear yard. The courtyard's most unusual feature is an 8-foot level change between its lower amenity room access and rear street-level entry. Two distinct congregating terraces are located at each level and the court's opposite ends. A garden wall and vine-covered trellis provide privacy and containment and an overlook nook from which to experience the landscape. Its sinuous terraced slopes reference Hudson River woodland landscapes and deliberately consume much of the court garden by gently navigating its dramatic grade change. A towering Dawn Redwood is the garden's statuesque focal point, providing human scale and a sense of timelessness. Inspired by private European residential landscaped courts, residents can enjoy a beloved escape and private domain that calms and soothes urban life.
With its eye-popping views of NYC and the Hudson River, the building's rooftop amenity terrace provides additional outdoor space escapes. The terrace's topographic and spatially defining landscape has created places for small private gatherings and significant events. Companion plant communities create a visually cohesive landscape character within which sunbathing, grilling, outdoor dining, and entertainment occur. The terrace's undulating indigenous alpine wildflower meadow borders garden path links and envelops each social destination.
