New York, New York
Radio Park was conceived as a multi-purpose community landscape for Rockefeller Center’s entire tenant population and their guests – similar to a town’s “village green.” As one of Rockefeller Center’s few remaining unfinished roofs, the ½ acre expanse presented an opportunity to connect two office buildings with a shared outdoor tenant amenity. It hosts a variety of outdoor workspaces which cater to the individual as well as large group conferences. As an easily accessible rooftop, the aspirations for its landscape development were deemed to be equaled with Rockefeller Center’s other internationally recognized public spaces. With Radio City Music Hall’s roof symmetrically positioned between two of the Center’s office buildings, their 9th and 10th floors became logical locations for tenant amenity space improvements due to their rooftop access. The shear expanse of this empty void required a landscape of a scale and proportion to visually register within its four-sided building wall context. Radio Park developed as a landscape out of which a diverse network of social gathering nodes and connecting paths have been carved. Large-scaled plantings deliberately obscured the rooftop’s four edges to mystify the landscape’s elevated suspension within a familiar NYC setting. Designed for significant use flexibility, the park’s landscape experience is dominated by multi-sensory sensibilities rooted in nature. Radio Park’s landscape embraces its distinct place within Rockefeller Center’s architectural identity and rich cultural heritage.
