Office Community Rooftop Landscape
New York, New York
Embracing both city and garden, HMWhite’s Solar Carve sky garden exploits the unique shared landscape context of the Hudson River and the Highline below. Its 12-story roof exposure prompted a step-one investigation of its micro-climatic conditions to measure and assess human comfort levels. 3D wind and solar mapping model simulations revealed a series of seasonal extremes which would adversely affect use. Landscape buffers and garden structures were introduced to mitigate environmental and seasonal conditions, extend seasonal use, and enhance building tenants’ experiences day and night. A sequence of “outdoor” rooms was spatially organized for use flexibility within a visually cohesive landscape framework. A distinct garden material vocabulary was curated to reference the neighborhood’s historic charms while harmonizing with the building’s bold architectural and contemporary design. The Hudson River waterfront setting offers a one-of-a-kind outdoor workspace and entertaining experience. Options for a quiet place escape, places for group or team meetings, work lunches, and after-hours team building and entertaining occasions present a new paradigm for urban office space working environments.
