Jackson Park

Village Green

Long Island City, New York

Framed by three 40 plus story towers, a 1 ½ acre common open space landscape emerges as the identity feature after which this mix-used residential development’s is named. Functioning like a historic town green, Jackson Park’s landscape is a community gathering center and residents’ social heart and oxygenating soul. Servicing more than 700 apartments, it offers a variety of popular passive and semi-active recreational amenities which are spatially organized around a large open lawn. The lawn’s central location is defined by a regionally based woodland landscape that permeates out from the buildings’ foundations. The woodland hosts a complimentary network of plant types and companion communities through which a network of garden walkways link building entries and access a collection of distinct activities spaces. Visual and functional clarity is achieved through a cohesive landscape character as the Park’s primary spatial structure. Adjacent to the vast and open LIRR rail corridor, the landscape’s scale, density, and critical mass buffers its transit and industrial context. References to the neighborhood’s industrial commercial heritage inspired the design of the park’s site elements and materials. Proximity to the East River and its original ecology informed the landscape’s plant communities to deepen connections with its environmental and urban development heritage.
