HMWhite is proud to have received a Merit Award in the Residential Landscape Architecture Design category for our Hell’s Kitchen Garden Courts project. The award recognizes excellence in landscape architecture. The jury was impressed with the design’s approach to working with the constraints of shallow structural slabs, low light levels and high wind speeds. Sculpted landforms, lightweight growing media and custom fixed retaining seating elements allowed for the development of a robust native Hudson River Valley planting ecosystem. Copses of Bowhall Maples with accents of American Hornbeams humanized the scale and offered a spatial structure that highlighted garden “hillocks” in the open space starved neighborhood.
