WHO WE ARE

Founded in 1993 by Hank White, FASLA, in New York City, and led today by Hank, HMWhite has practiced the principle that a designed landscape is among the most enduring forms of cultural expression and environmental accountability. For over 30 years, we have collaborated with the most celebrated domestic and international architects, interpreting previously conceived boundaries between architecture and landscape. Our process is collaborative and inclusive. We listen first, then collect information and pertinent scientific data to solve project challenges that are site and jurisdictional-specific. While our office is in New York City, local and regional working relationships have broadened our projects’ geographic reach. Our commercial, residential, urban, and institutional projects share common attributes through their sensitive integration of ecologic principles with human and societal needs. Each design solution creates a productive landscape with an environmental purpose and cultural meaning that inspires social engagement. We relentlessly seek dynamic “project community” input to reveal a landscape’s distinctive personality.

Our work continues to explore new ways of enhancing people's connection with nature, whether it is someone’s home landscape or an expansive public open space. We strive to create immersive landscapes that awaken our senses, inspire community gatherings, provide solace and respite, and improve wellness. Each HMWhite team member employs this philosophy and understands that a landscape’s design success relies on a balanced reconciliation of environmental, social, and economic factors. Our shared pursuit of reconciling these sometimes-competing interrelationships inspires us to perform our best work.

OUR APPROACH

Science + design + living world are the building blocks of the firm’s design approach. HMWhite’s mission is to apply design excellence to the intersection of ecological and cultural systems in creating meticulously crafted landscapes. Each project circumstance is viewed from a global perspective with an informed local response. Through our belief in the power of design, we are dedicated to creating positive change environmentally, socially, and aesthetically. As evidence-based analytical people, we continuously build upon our collaborations with clients and allied professionals to develop discoveries and delight within all forms of landscape improvements. The consistency of our strong teamwork exemplifies the firm’s breadth of award-winning projects and their positive community impacts. With each project, we strive to cultivate a culture of stewardship and engagement with environmental accountability for a more resilient future.
