As landscape architects and urban planners, we viscerally understand the importance of accessible public park space in every community — a place within walking distance to sit in the sunshine, picnic with a friend, smell the flowers, watch the birds and meet your neighbors. Open space is a very precious commodity in NYC, while for many areas in downtown Manhattan, a patch of green is few and far between.

Since last summer, HMWhite’s Aaron Booher and Yue Guan have been actively involved in helping to lead a growing coalition of neighborhood volunteers to clean up and open Elizabeth Street Garden to the public and work to preserve it as permanent green, open space.
