Unique urban landscape environments have been designed for Studio Gang's proposed office building with its remarkable Hudson River and High Line frontage. Taking advantage of uninterrupted waterfront views and a robust High Line landscape, HMWhite explored a diversity of user programs and scenarios, and their different architectural manifestations for two roofdeck terraces. Each design iteration was guided by environmental best practices, human comfort enhancement strategies and experiential engagement. An open piazza design emerged after a rigorous consensus building process that reconciled flexibility, marketability, address-definition and place-making criteria. Embracing the shared landscape of both the Hudson River and the High Line, HMWhite's landscape design build upon both, the man-made construct and the natural. A vivid material vocabulary references the neighborhood while establishing a distinctive character. Both the open piazza and sky garden offer a myriad of outdoor working and entertaining opportunities. Each terrace design provides space for quiet escape as well as lively social gathering. Either activity places one within a landscape framework that reinforces sense of place while still providing the mystery of the undiscovered.
