SUNY New Paltz
The State University of New York (SUNY) at New Paltz is located on a 226 acre campus adjacent to the town of New Paltz at the foot of the Catskills. As part of a larger facilities master plan conducted by Ehrenkrantz Eckstut and Kuhn Architects, HM White has developed and coordinated a comprehensive campus landscape master plan within the broader study. Through quantifying and qualifying campus site elements and landscape systems, site improvement initiatives and projects were identified to fulfill the following campus plan goals:
- Enhance pedestrian environment and its connectivity
- Rationalize parking and vehicular circulation
- Distinquish and clarify landscape characters
- Improve prevailing and human comfort conditions
- Integrate sustainable site design initiatives
- Improve campus image and landscape legibility
The campus features mature trees, green quadrangles, a central pond and stream, spectacular views to the Catskill ridge and surrounding hard and softwood woodlands. Design concepts addressing project goals have been demonstrated and prioritized into a series of campus projects coordinated with proposed building and facilities reorganization and planning initiatives. Project cost estimates were prepared which informed phasing and capital budget planning strategies. The aggregate of the projects’ designs has established a cohesive campus landscape plan to guide and direct both short and long term campus improvements.
