St. George Ballpark Waterfront

Staten Island, New York

HM White’s waterfront plan for the Yankees’ minor league ballpark links Staten Island’s St. George Richmond Terrace to its shoreline. Access is embraced with an esplanade, stadium plazas, meandering walkways, circuit fitness course, and bikeway, all set within a native marine woodland context. Accommodating public transit and new parking facilities, the site design integrates bio-infiltration, soil layering and capping to solve stormwater and contamination issues. As a partial brownfield, the open space design includes:

  • Shoreline Ecosystem Restoration
  • Bio-Infiltration Storm Water Management
  • Mature Woodland Preservation
  • Capped Contaminated Soils
  • Phyto-Remediation with Poplar Groves
  • Active/Passive Recreational Amenities

The landscape’s natural processes renew the vitality and sustainability of the site’s natural resources. Meadow grasslands and marine woodlands frame the facilities to become the complex’s visual “glue,” which is appropriately scaled to the ballpark’s presence.
